So much to say about Ramona. California's official oldest outdoor play.
Held in The Ramona Bowl, it's a story about love and sacrifice between Ramona and Alessandro.
Helen Hunt Jackson wrote her story after she came to California as an emissary of the United States government to look into the conditions among the Indians, which with each passing year, had grown worse and the natives found themselves pushed from one spot to another, each more barren than the one they had left. She wrote er book in 1882-1883.
Her goal was to present in this (the condition of the Indians) in some way that the public would hear. She stated, "If only I could write such a story as Mrs. Stowe wrote of negro slavery."
A friend, a Mrs. Jordan told her the story of an Indian girl named Ramona and inspired Helen Jackson to write the story.
It truly was a cast of a few hundred, along with horses, mules, wagons.
Colorful Indian dances and costumes. Singing and The Ramona Bowl itself was something to see.
I have added a picture Jim took of me eating my favorite funnel cake with lots of powdered sugar. It was too fun.
Enjoy the pictures.
